{"id":57,"date":"2014-07-24T18:16:59","date_gmt":"2014-07-24T22:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bigfootbridge.club\/bigfootbridge\/?page_id=57"},"modified":"2014-07-24T18:17:23","modified_gmt":"2014-07-24T22:17:23","slug":"slam-bidding-process-answers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/bigfootbridge.club\/bigfootbridge\/?page_id=57","title":{"rendered":"Slam Bidding Process: Answers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Slam Bidding<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To succeed in making a slam you need a source of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">tricks<\/span>\u00a0and adequate <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">controls<\/span>\u00a0in all suits.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First round control is either an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ace<\/span>\u00a0or a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Void<\/span>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Second round control is either a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">King<\/span>\u00a0or a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">singleton<\/span>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sources of tricks can be:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">High\u00a0card<\/span>\u00a0strength.<\/p>\n<p>A running <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">suit<\/span>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">trumps<\/span>\u00a0and side suit shortness in both hands.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Typical slam bidding process:<\/p>\n<p>Discovering combined <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">strength<\/span>\u00a0of the two hands.<\/p>\n<p>Checking for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">controls<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Example:\u00a0 Jacoby 2NT<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Opener bids 1H<\/li>\n<li>Responder bids 2NT.\u00a0 This tells opener:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 We are in a game forcing auction<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 We have at least a 9 card trump fit, so we might have a source of tricks in trumps.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If not signing off, opener shows either:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Side suit singleton or void, i.e. control in that suit, at the 3 level; or<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 A second good 5+ card suit, i.e. a source of additional tricks.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Responder then bids cheapest first round control and then the partners show controls up the line, discovering if there\u2019s an uncontrolled suit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Blackwood and Gerber<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of Blackwood (and Gerber) is not to drag your partner to slam, it\u2019s to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">avoid<\/span>\u00a0bidding a slam missing two\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">controls (aces or keycards)<\/span> .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Avoid using Blackwood when:<\/p>\n<p>You have a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">void<\/span>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>There is an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unbid<\/span>\u00a0suit where you don\u2019t have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">first<\/span>\u00a0or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">second<\/span>\u00a0round control.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Roman Key Card Blackwood<\/h2>\n<p>If the partnership is contemplating slam in a suit then the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">King<\/span>\u00a0and the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Queen<\/span>\u00a0of the trump suit are also important cards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>RKC provides tools for confirming that the partnership has at least 5 of these 6 cards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The four <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Aces<\/span>\u00a0.<\/li>\n<li>The King of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">trumps<\/span>\u00a0.<\/li>\n<li>The Queen of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">trumps<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Collectively, the four Aces and the King of trumps are referred to as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">key\u00a0cards<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Original RKC \u201c0314\u201d.\u00a0 After the 4NT inquiry:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5C:\u00a0 0 or 3 keycards.<\/li>\n<li>5D: 1 or 4 keycards.<\/li>\n<li>5H: 2 keycards <strong>without<\/strong> the Queen of trumps.<\/li>\n<li>5S: 2 keycards <strong>with<\/strong> the Queen of trumps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1430 RKC switches the 5C and 5D responses and is marginally more efficient in some sequences.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5C: 1 or 4 keycards<\/li>\n<li>5D: 3 or 0 keycards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Asking for the Queen of Trumps<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If there\u2019s room for another suit between the RKC response and the trump suit, then the cheapest bid asks if the answerer has the trump Q.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 5 of trump suit denies the trump Q<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Anything else shows the trump Q<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New suit:\u00a0 shows that king<\/li>\n<li>6 of trump suit denies a side king but shows trump Q<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Example \u00a0(suit is H, using 1430):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Inquirer:\u00a0 4NT \u201cHey partner, we might have a slam, tell me your keycards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Answerer: 5C \u201cI have 1 or 4 keycards\u201d<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Inquirer:\u00a0 5D \u201cThat\u2019s good, but do you have the trump Q?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Answerer (Worst Case): 5H \u201cSorry, I don\u2019t have it.\u201d;
