Just let us have this auction to ourselves and we might let you in next hand.\u201d \u00a0Nowadays though, frisky opponents have the nerve to bid over your 1NT opening, making your auction harder. \u00a0\u201cBut I wanted to transfer\u201d says Responder, \u201cwhat do I do now? \u00a0I know, I\u2019ll double to tell my partner that ol\u2019 meanie on my right stole my bid.\u201d \u00a0And thereby the opponents get their bids in and make your life harder with little risk of paying consequences. \u00a0So, what do we do about it? \u00a0Do we give up? \u00a0Do we say \u201cit\u2019s over?\u201d \u00a0Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor\u2026oh, wait, that\u2019s Animal House. \u00a0My answer is \u201cNo! \u00a0It\u2019s not over!\u201d \u00a0This worksheet describes a way to bid after interference while preserving a penalty double in most situations. \u00a0Sometimes you can get a good board penalizing the opponents on a hand where you don\u2019t have a game yourself, such as when the responder has 7 or 8 points and 4 cards in the opponent\u2019s suit.<\/p>\n<h2>If they double the\u00a01NT bid:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>XX means \u201cI want to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">defend<\/span>, they are in trouble and you are making 1NT easily.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>All of your other systems (Stayman, transfers, Texas) are on as if the double never\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">happened<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If they bid 2C over 1NT:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Double is\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Stayman<\/span>, the only \u201cstolen bid double\u201d in our system.<\/li>\n<li>All other systems are\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">on<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If they bid 2D, 2H, 2S over 1NT:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Double is\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">penalty<\/span>\u00a0oriented.<\/li>\n<li>New suits at the 2 level are\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to play<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">natural<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>New suits at the 3 level are<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0game-forcing<\/span>, promising at least\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">five<\/span>\u00a0cards.<\/li>\n<li>A cuebid is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Stayman<\/span>,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0game-forcing<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Texas transfers are still\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">on<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Basically, we revert to Goren style bidding, without transfers. \u00a0We might have to make a guess on invitational hands whether to go for penalties or to show our suit(s).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Poor old 1NT opener. \u00a0It used to be that a 1NT opening intimidated the opponents. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve got 15-17 high card points!
